Information
The Eels always sounded similar to the experimental alternative rock sounds of Beck, singing style and all. And there's not one problem with that. Mark Oliver Everett, or ‘E’ as he’s better known as, has a pretty deep history of traumatic events throughout his life, and it’s a good thing he’s formed Eels. Not only does he have an outlet for his woes, the rest of us can take in his curious collaboration of instruments.
The eighth album has taken a slightly wearier turn with an eerie documentation of depression and the “death of common decency”. Most of the CD’s tracks were recorded on a four track machine, which nowadays gives an almost cold edge to each song. The album holds as much beauty in the lyrics as it does the sadness within the sadder sounds from the guitar and piano. It’s not all doom-and-gloom for Everett though, and the album carries with it a hope that there is indeed something better to look forward to.
